A 12-week self-paced creative writing course designed to help young writers build confidence, strengthen storytelling skills, and discover how fun writing can be.
Weekly Short Story: Age 10 and Under is a 12-week self-paced creative writing course designed to help young writers build confidence, strengthen storytelling skills, and discover how fun writing can be.
Through engaging pre-recorded video lessons, students will explore creative writing in a playful, supportive environment while creating original stories of their own. Students might write about dragons, magical schools, mysterious creatures, talking animals, strange inventions, or entirely original worlds of their own creation!
Unlike many self-paced writing courses, students won’t simply watch videos and complete prompts on their own. Each weekly assignment includes the opportunity to submit writing and receive personalized feedback from a real instructor.
Feedback is designed to encourage creativity while helping students strengthen their storytelling skills. We don’t believe every story needs to be “fixed”—instead, we help young writers recognize what’s already working and discover ways to make their ideas even stronger.
Throughout the course, students will explore important storytelling concepts including:
Students will also receive a Young Writer’s Toolkit filled with downloadable resources to support their creativity, including character creation pages, story planning templates, worldbuilding activities, description builders, revision checklists, and extra writing challenges.
Because the course is self-paced, families can move through lessons on their own schedule while still benefiting from structured guidance and meaningful instructor feedback. The pre-recorded format also allows students to revisit favorite lessons, prompts, and activities whenever inspiration strikes.
No prior creative writing experience is required. Whether a student already fills notebooks with stories or is just beginning to explore creative writing, the course is designed to meet them where they are.
By the end of the twelve weeks, students will have written multiple original stories while developing stronger storytelling skills, greater creative confidence, and a deeper love of writing.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K–5.3 — Narrative Writing

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K–5.4 — Production and Distribution of Writing
Students produce writing in a wide range of genres and styles — from dragons and magical schools to talking animals, mysterious creatures, and entirely original worlds — developing flexibility and growing confidence in their own creative ideas.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K–5.5 — Strengthening Writing Through Revision
Each weekly assignment includes the opportunity to submit work for personalized instructor feedback — giving young writers supported, low-pressure experience with the revision process on their own schedule. Students can also revisit favorite lessons and prompts throughout the course.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K–5.10 — Range of Writing
Students write consistently across 12 weeks in a self-paced, high-output format — building a collection of original stories and developing a regular writing habit and growing creative confidence over time.
