Do you have a cat lover who also loves to tell stories?
In this 12-week creative writing course, students will create original stories inspired by cats of every kind—from adventurous kittens and clever detectives to magical felines, brave warriors, and pampered house cats with big personalities.
Each week combines a fun writing lesson with plenty of time to brainstorm, write, and share. Along the way, students will strengthen their storytelling skills while building confidence in a supportive community of fellow cat enthusiasts.
Over the course of the semester, writers will have the opportunity to develop recurring cat characters, build their own feline worlds, and explore increasingly advanced storytelling concepts.
What We’ll Explore
Throughout the semester, we’ll use cat-themed prompts and activities to explore important writing concepts, including:
- Creating memorable characters
- Building interesting settings
- Writing dialogue
- Developing plot and conflict
- Adding description and sensory details
- Creating mysteries and surprises
- Writing fantasy and adventure stories
- Revising and improving our work
Students are welcome to write a brand-new story each week or continue developing favorite characters and worlds throughout the semester.
Kitty Cat Writer’s Pack
Each week, students will receive a printable worksheet that recaps the day’s lesson in a fun, kitty-centric way! These resources can be used throughout the course and long after the semester ends.
Personalized Feedback
One of the best ways to grow as a writer is through thoughtful feedback.
Throughout the semester, students may submit writing for instructor feedback. Feedback is designed to encourage growth while celebrating each writer’s unique voice and ideas.
Final Project
Throughout the semester, students will create a collection of original cat-themed stories. For our final project, each writer will choose their favorite story from the course and create an illustrated book cover for it.
Students may draw their cover by hand or use digital art tools if they prefer. We’ll talk about what makes a great book cover, including how illustrations, titles, and design choices can help attract readers and communicate the feel of a story.
During our final class celebration, students will have the opportunity to share their cover art, introduce their story to the group, and read an excerpt or favorite section aloud. This is a fun, low-pressure way for writers to celebrate their work and see how much they’ve grown over the semester.
